Spring Cleaning for Pets

Spring is just a few weeks off, and not a minute too soon! As the weather warms up, many of us will be rolling up our sleeves for some seasonal chores. If you have pets, you may want to add a few extra things to your spring to-do list. Read on as a Colorado Springs, CO offers some spring cleaning tips for pet owners.

Parasite Control

When the warm weather returns, so will parasites! Make sure that your four-legged buddy is current on all their parasite control products.

Pet Supply Check

Go through your furry friend’s treats, food, and medicine. Discard and replace anything that is past the expiration date.

Fur Busting

Spring is a peak shedding time. As Fluffy and Fido change their winter wardrobes for summer coats, you might find yourself surrounded by fur. We recommend vacuuming daily and dusting regularly. To get pet hair off your furniture or upholstery, try using a squeegee or a damp dish sponge. You may also want to put washable slipcovers on your furniture.

Exams

Most of our four-legged patients should see us at least once a year. If your dog or cat is overdue for veterinary care, let this be a reminder to make an appointment. Also, make sure Fido and Fluffy are current on all their vaccinations. Rabies shots are particularly important. When the weather warms up, many wild animals will be out and about. You don’t want to risk your pet getting infected if they have an encounter with one. Ask your vet for recommendations.

Grooming

Be sure to brush your furry pal regularly. If you have a dog, take him outside for his beauty sessions when it’s warm enough. That way, the extra fur will blow away before it gets all over your things. Of course, spring is also a great time to give Fido a good bath! You may need to give your canine buddy a different haircut for summertime as well. Ask your vet for specific recommendations.

Bedding

We recommend washing all of your pet’s bedding. Use hot water and unscented detergent.

Toybox

This is a great time to go through your pet’s playthings! Check care labels for washing instructions: some things can go right into the dishwasher or washing machine. Toss and replace anything that is ripped or worn.
