Understanding Your Cat

Do you have a feline buddy living with you? Cute, cuddly, and lovable, kitties make absolutely wonderful pets. These little furballs are certainly big on personality and full of quirks! In this article, your Colorado Springs veterinarian offers tips on understanding your cat.

Scratching

It may seem like your furry friend is trying to destroy your furniture, but cats don’t scratch out of malice. Cats’ claws are crucial to their survival in the wild, so it’s no wonder that kitties have such strong instinctive urges to keep those sharp little nails intact. Work with your cat, and provide proper scratching options.

Kneading

Have you ever settled down with a good book or movie, a favorite beverage, and your cat, only to have Fluffy start kneading you? Kittens knead to stimulate milk flow when nursing, so this slightly painful form of feline affection may be a sign that your furball thinks of you as a parent.

High Places

Have you ever found your cat staring down at you from the top of the fridge or a bookcase? When Kitty lived in the wild, trees provided shelter and safety, as well as a great vantage point. Fluffy may only be hunting your stocking feet, and the only predator she needs to worry about is the vacuum cleaner, but she hasn’t outgrown her love for high places.

Small Spaces

As you may have noticed, our feline friends really like enclosed places. Boxes, paper grocery bags, opened drawers, kitty condos, laundry baskets … the list goes on. This is another habit left over from the days when our feline friends were wild. Small spaces offered cats protection from predators and elements, so they make Fluffy feel safe.

Play

It may be lots of fun to watch kitties chasing toy mice or birds, but your furball’s antics are actually driven by her inner hunter. Provide plenty of toys, and engage your furball with interactive play, to fulfill Fluffy’s need to pounce and chase things.

Unsolved Mysteries

While we do know quite a bit about cats, there are some things that, well, we haven’t quite figured out yet, like the reason kitties spend so much time asleep. Some of Fluffy’s habits and mannerisms may never make much sense, but they’re certainly cute and entertaining!
